The press in the Northern Triangle of Central America suffers more and more from what is already the violent norm for Nicaraguans. Adding the realities of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, in 2022 there have been: assassinations of journalists, exile, hiding within their countries to continue reporting, imprisonment, espionage, defamation; and massive attacks from social networks. Quimy de León, a Guatemalan journalist, and Jennifer Vila, a Honduran journalist, have both witnessed it firsthand. Both founders of media outlets, are being harassed for uncovering government and business corruption. In this conversation, they talk about the current hostile situations—"the worst since the end of the dictatorships," says De León-; there is also discussion of errors committed by independent press outlets and the corruption that still abounds in certain sectors of the regional press. The future does not look bright for journalists, but the present reveals a strong commitment: both admit that their media continue to investigate corruption cases that they will publish soon.
