The son of Doris Pérez Vásquez shows a bullet hole in the house where his family lived, before the attack on the National Agrarian Institute of Honduras on June 5, 2011. The sister of one of the bullets that caused that hole in the wall hit Doris Pérez in the stomach. The bullet went through the cell phone she was wearing on her belt. The fact that the phone cushioned part of the impact probably saved her life.

To get water, María Aguilar, 45, walks every day between ravines and slopes alongside her five-year-old nephew. She is in charge of the housework, which includes supplying water for consumption and cleaning. She lives with the rest of her family in San Lorenzo, on the outskirts of Berlín. “Imagine that here a man who works in the fields earns $60 a month and, if you want to have water from the pipe every day, it’s at least a $20-a-week investment. The men would work to buy water alone,” says María, climbing uphill with a water jar on her back.

Trials were held in mass groups and thousands of cases were not individualized: people were accused of collective crimes.

The clearing of forest for construction affects seven communities surrounding the airport project: Condadillo, Flor de Mangle, Volcancillo, Loma Larga, Llano Los Patos, El Tamarindo, and El Ciprés. Their inhabitants used to get their water from the Condadillo, Managuara, Los Lagartos, and Condadillo river basins. Since construction began in December 2024, these communities have been unable to access these water sources for fear of reprisals from CEPA employees.

Bukele’s Airport Project Brings Deforestation and Displacement

On Jan. 17, 2025, Eneida and her sister Virna carried out the first poster campaign with Carlos Santos Abarca’s face in the Historic Center of San Salvador. Carrying three containers of paste, they covered the posts across several blocks of the city center. That was the second activity of the year. Eneida has not received a warning call since February 2022, when a witness testified to the Attorney General’s Office that they had seen someone very similar to Carlos Abarca in the vicinity of Cuscatlán Park. Eneida asked the prosecutor's office to review the cameras. She never received a response.

When they go out, they paste posters with information about their son. “I don't like it when she walks with me, because I don't want to put her at risk. This country is very dangerous. I walk here because I’m not afraid of anything,” he said one of those nights in the Divino Salvador del Mundo square.

The Attorney General’s Office decided at the end of August 2016 that the evidence of three massacres be buried in the same grave. Since 2007, the Attorney General’s Office had only searched, without success, for DNA identifications among the skeletons of the victims and their surviving relatives who are still alive and demanding justice. The 34 pieces of evidence from three massacres now lie buried in the Santa Isabel General Cemetery in Santa Ana.
